FG Bans Tax Collection by Contractors on Nigerian Roads

A Ministerial Implementation Committee of the National Economic Council (NEC) yesterday directed that federal and state governments be barred from hiring out its tax collection duties to contractors and non-revenue officials.
The committee also mandates the Inspector-General of Police to dismantle all road blocks mounted by such private tax collectors hired by state governments along the country’s highways. 
The NEC which considered these and other recommendations at its meeting chaired by Vice-President Namadi Sambo at the State House, Abuja, however, asked the committee to fine-tune them in consultation with state attorneys-general and report back next month. The NEC comprises state governors, Central Bank Governor, National Planning Minister, Minister of Finance, and Chief Economic Adviser to the President.
